Knit B’ham weaves these powerful forces together to build an inclusive, safe, and creative community of knitting and crochet enthusiasts. 

Founded by Isabel Rubio, Knit B’ham continues her work of community building by creating a welcoming space for all people to gather around their common interest in making magic with beautiful yarn.  Knit B’ham strives to bring ethically sourced and processed natural fibers to our customers to promote slow fashion and build sustainable wardrobes.

    Isabel Rubio

    Shopkeeper + Yarn Slinger

    Isabel spent over 30 years in the nonprofit sector and founded ¡HICA!, where she spent 22 years at the Executive Director.  A closet creative and long-time knitter, Isabel dreamed of opening a yarn shop after her local yarn shop closed in 2020. Three years later, the doors of Knit B’ham opened in the Fall of 2023.  Isabel loves to knit sweaters and socks!

    Amy has been knitting since 2023. She is a passionate fiber enthusiast, arts graduate, and a believer in ethical, handmade clothing. She is a garment sewist that brings over a decade of shop experience to Knit, and is trained as a sewing pattern designer. Amy would love to help you through your fitting dilemmas and pattern picking woes! She enjoys knitting vests, sweaters, and anything scrappy.

    Jamie is a former yarn shop manager with years of experience in the business. She is also a beautiful knitter and innovative pattern designer with a knack for helping others. Jamie is in the shop on Wednesdays from 12 to 3. She is also our house blocker for your items and can repair most everything hand-knitted!

    Katie is the newest addition to the Knit B’ham team, and has been knitting since 2025. She is a math minded data wiz as well as a sewist, and loves to make bags! You can find her in the shop slinging yarn three days a week.

  • Tamara Oechslin

    Knitting Teacher + Pattern Designer

    Tamara is a talented knitting instructor and pattern designer who has been immersed in fiber since she was a child. She is a detailed and patient teacher who teaches many of our beginner, sock, and technical knitting classes. If you’re a lefty knitter, don’t fear- Tamara is too! By day, Tamara is a university professor, but on the weekend, you can find her knitting, running, or playing with her adorable dogs.

    Crochet + Knitting Teacher

    Helen is an experienced knitter and crocheter. She has crocheted since 1958 and knitted since 1964, when she was in middle and high school. She is a beautiful craftsman that has tested patterns for designers all over the world, and teaches both group and private lessons. She loves seeing people embrace the arts, absorb new information, and grow. Helen loves making anything that challenges her!

    Mattie is a prolific knitter and crocheter who loves to knit socks. She is crazy fast and can turn around a pair in less than a week! Mattie also loves to knit sweaters and t-shirts. While she works in therapy during the day, you can find her two Saturdays a month slingin’ yarn. Mattie is also a patient and detailed teacher who does both private and group lessons and loves showing the “why” behind techniques. She teaches t-shirts, socks, and more!

    Susan learned to knit from her mom as a child. She was a teacher for years and loved the creative side of the classroom, and began working at her LYS.     When Susan doesn’t have her hands in fiber, you can find her with family & friends, walking, doing yoga, or playing with her dog Lucy.

Knitting and Crochet Classes

Knit B’ham is delighted to bring a variety of classes to both new and experienced fiber artists in our dedicated classroom space.

  • Our classes are held inside our cozy shop on Clairmont Avenue and are taught by our talented local instructors.

    Classes must have a minimum of two folks enrolled to proceed, and have a cap of six folks each. Please sign up early to ensure your spot. Kits with class materials are available for purchase prior to your first session of class.

    To sign up or find out more information, click on the classes below. If you would like assistance signing up for a class, we are happy to help. Just give us a call.

  • Cancellations must be made 72 hours prior to first class by calling the shop at 205.538.5246 or emailing knitbham@gmail.com.

    If you must miss a class and contact us within that 72 hour window, you will be issued class credit and we will work with you to accommodate space in an upcoming class within 3 months.

    No class credit is offered for students who no show.

    If a class does not meet the minimum sign ups, we will not be able to proceed, and will contact you ahead of time to inform you of any changes.

    Please understand that we cannot offer refunds.

    We want everyone to have the opportunity to learn to craft, so scholarships are available for all of our classes. You can let us know if you need assistance by sending us an email to knitbham@gmail.com.

  • We release new classes every month- if there is something you would love to see a class on, let us know. We will typically try to coordinate with our instructors to release more sections or dates if a class sells out.

Crochet is a versatile fiber art making a comeback on social media for all ages, and for good reason! Do you want to make all of the cute sweaters, summer tops, bags, blankets, and stuffed animals you can think of? Start here- this is the class for you!

In this two part class, you will learn all the basic stitches needed to make everything from granny square blankets to socks to teddy bears.

  • How to make a slipknot

  • How to make a foundation chain

  • Single crochet, double crochet, half double crochet, treble stitch, and slip stitch

  • If time permits, we will also discuss changing colors

Materials:

  • Worsted or bulky weight wool yarn (we recommend Cascade 220 Superwash in a light color so that you can easily see your stitches).

  • One crochet hook in size US H (5.00 mm)

  • An ergonomic 5.0mm KnitPro Waves 2.0 hook

Knitting is a fun and creative hobby that’s been cherished by crafters for generations. Join our Knitting 101 class and unlock the door to a realm of possibilities as you learn the fundamental techniques of knitting:

  • the cast-on

  • the bind-off

  • the knit stitch

  • the purl stitch.

You’ll learn knitting terms, tools, the anatomy of the basic stitches, as well as how to master the four techniques that are the foundation for all knitting projects.

Whether you're seeking a new way to unwind, a means of self-expression, or a way to connect with a vibrant community, knitting has something wonderful to offer!

Materials:

  • Chunky weight yarn in a light color (so that you can see your stitches)

  • US 10 Straight Needles (6.0mm)

Join Tamara in making an adorable and easy roll brim hat in this two-class series! This project is perfect for students who have finished Knit 101 and are looking for their next project.

You’ve learned to knit and are well on your way to beautiful items and gifts for loved ones. Take the stress out of your first project and sign up for a bit of guidance as you work through following a pattern and mastering your knitting. An easy first option could be a basic roll brim hat – only knits, no purls. Students will learn joining and knitting in the round, a very simple decrease and transitioning to double-pointed needles (aka DPNs).

During this class, Tamara will guide you through the basics of written pattern reading as you learn how to knit in the round, decrease your stitches to create the shape of your hat at the crown, use circular needles, DPNs (double point needles) and properly bind off your hat.

Week 1: Cable cast-on and getting started in the round

Week 2: More pattern reading, DPN’s and decreases

Level: Beginner (know how to knit and purl, don’t have to be 100% confident!)

So you just learned the knit and purl stitch- what’s next? Build on your knowledge with Helen, and learn new techniques to make this classic striped hat. These hats make wonderful gifts, and are a fabulous vehicle to become a more confident knitter.

In this two session class, you will learn:

-How to knit 2×2 ribbing

-How to work in the round

-How to change colors in your knitting (and make stripes!)

-How to make simple decreases

-How to use DPNs (double pointed needles) to make those decreases

-How to read a simple pattern

We will be using the Striped Ribbed Beanie pattern designed by Churchmouse Yarns and Teas.

Materials:

  • 2 skeins Blue Sky Fibers Woolstok Worsted (one in your main color, the other in your contrast stripe color). If you have a wool allergy, we are happy to help you find an alternative yarn!

  • US 3 (3.25mm) 16” circular needles

  • US 3 (3.25mm) DPNs (double pointed needles)

  • 5 locking bulb markers (1 in a contrasting color)

  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Hack It Jacket Knitting Workshop with Katherine

Dates: September 21st & 28th, October 19th, and November 9th. Class dates are spread out to give you time to knit.

There are two series of dates available for this class on Mondays- a daytime (1-2:30 PM) or nighttime class (5:30-7 PM). Please choose what class time you would like in the dropdown below for registration. NIGHTTIME CLASS IS NOW SOLD OUT.

Prerequisites: Confident casting on, off, knitting, and purling.

Join Katherine Berdy to knit the Hack It Jacket designed by Nina Ruth, a modular pattern that allows you to make your dream cardigan by mixing and matching different techniques and design details provided in the pattern to “hack” a base cardigan.

This is a four day workshop where you’ll learn a wide variety of essential garment knitting techniques that will make you a more confident knitter.

Here are some of the hacks included in the pattern for customization:

-Changing yarn and gauge

-Adding cables

-Altering the sleeves, neckline, body, edge finishings, closures, and length of your cardigan

-Adding texture, stripes, or pockets to your cardigan

Sizing

Please note that while this pattern as written has a fairly narrow range of finished chest measurements (42”-53”), part of the class (and discussed using charts within the pattern) is learning how to manipulate gauge to knit outside of the allotted size range. If you need a finished chest measurement smaller or larger than listed, we will show you how to make this pattern in a size that feels right for you. All bodies are welcome!

Workshop Overview

Prior to Class:

  • If you have a yarn or yarns that you would like to incorporate into your project, please go ahead and make a swatch (knitted flat, not in the round) to bring to class. Unsure what to do? Please read this Brooklyn Tweed tutorial. We will discuss swatching in depth during the workshop.

  • Purchase the Hack It Jacket pattern off of Ravelry and have it printed, available on a tablet, or on your phone for easy access during class.

Class One (September 21st):

  • Discuss design options

  • Discuss gauge/how to use gauge to manipulate size charts and to create a fabric you like

  • Decide what yarn combination you would like to use for your jacket

Homework: Create gauge swatches and figure out the fabric you would like to make for your project. Purchase your yarn if you haven’t during class one.

Class Two (September 28th):

  • Sizing and measurements for sweaters

  • Learn the following using swatches:

    • How to do increases

    • How to do short rows

    • How to make lifelines

Homework: Knit through the yoke of your sweater and apply techniques learned where needed.

Class Three (October 19th):

  • Picking up sleeves

  • How to do two at a time sleeves (if interested)

  • Tips & tricks

Homework: Pick up sleeves and get them started. Knit on project and get as far as you can (but you are by no means expected to be finished by the last class!) Come ready with questions for the last session.

Class Four (November 9th):

  • How to knit a buttonband

  • Finishing techniques

  • How to block your finished object

  • Final Questions

Beginner Mosaic Colorwork with Mattie

Dates: Saturday, January 9th and 23rd from 3-4:30 PM

Instructor: Mattie Adediji

Prerequisites: Feel comfortable knitting, purling, and casting on/off with your method of choice.

Join Mattie to make the Chapter Shawl (designed by Lily Kate France), a fun and approachable project that allows you to play with color and learn mosaic colorwork! Mosaic colorwork uses slipped stitches to create a pattern from two contrasting colors. It is a meditative and satisfying knitting technique that you can find in a wide range of projects.

In this two class series, you will learn:

  • Mosaic colorwork knitting

  • Reading a basic chart

  • Picking up stitches

  • Color changing in your knitting

  • KFB (knit front/back) increases

Materials:

This shawl is designed to use a minimum of two colors, with a total yardage of 667 - 678 yards (610 - 620 m). The designer used twelve mini skeins, but yours doesn’t have to use that many colors if it isn’t your style.

If you want to make a shawl with many colors like the one Lily Kate’s photos, we recommend Emma’s Practically Perfect Smalls in a variety of colors.

You can also use fingering weight scraps you may have in your stash from other projects!

Our Services

Knit B’ham is delighted to offer the following services:  

  • We are happy to offer help with your projects, time permitting.

    First 15m or less is free for projects using yarn purchased at Knit ($15 for yarn not purchased with us).

    15-30m is $30

    After 30 minutes, please schedule a private lesson.

  • Knitting and crochet private lessons are offered across a range of our instructors for individuals or small groups. We typically conduct private lessons on-site at Knit.

    To request a private lesson, email or call the shop with the information you would like to cover or project you would like to work on. We will pass along your information to an available instructor, and they will reach out to you to set up a time.

    Payment is paid to the shop prior to your lesson.

    Rates

    1 hour: $60/person

    30 minutes: $30/person

  • Blocking: We will wet or steam block your knitted and crocheted items to give them a finished look. Please allow for a two-week turnaround.

    From $20: Small items such as a scarf, hat, or small shawl

    From $30: Large items such as a sweater or blanket

    Weaving in Ends: For those who hate weaving in ends, we get it (who likes weaving in ends?)

    $10 minimum, $35/hour

  • Mending of knitted garments, including but not limited to sweaters, socks, blankets, & accessories. Please note that we only mend items created by hand.

    Minimum $20 per repair.

Store Policies

  • Store credit will be issued for unwound yarn within 90 days of purchase. After 90 days, we are unable to accept returns.

    Needles, hooks, wound yarn, and sale items are final sale.

  • We are happy to wind yarn purchased with us, time permitting. If we are busy, we will ask that you leave your yarn with us to be wound for next day pickup.

    Yarn purchased elsewhere costs $5 per skein to wind should time allow.

  • Classes are on a first come, first serve basis. Payment for class will hold your spot. We have a 72 hour cancellation policy for our classes. Please email or call the shop ahead of time if unable to attend.

    If you cancel prior to 72 hours, you may receive credit for a future class to be used within 90 days. Classes are nonrefundable.

Stairless Entry

We have a stairless second entrance. To access it, take a right after the golf course onto 38th St S as you’re going up Clairmont Avenue.

Then, take the first left onto Clairmont Alley S behind General and Shoppe. Drive up until you see the small parking lot behind the greenhouse.

Park there, and give us a call at 205-538-5246. There is a door behind the fence to your right- we are required to keep that door locked, so your call will let us know to come unlock it for you.
