Knit B’ham weaves these powerful forces together to build an inclusive, safe, and creative community of knitting and crochet enthusiasts.
Founded by Isabel Rubio, Knit B’ham continues her work of community building by creating a welcoming space for all people to gather around their common interest in making magic with beautiful yarn. Knit B’ham strives to bring ethically sourced and processed natural fibers to our customers to promote slow fashion and build sustainable wardrobes.

Isabel Rubio
Shopkeeper + Yarn Slinger
Isabel spent over 30 years in the nonprofit sector and founded ¡HICA!, where she spent 22 years at the Executive Director. A closet creative and long-time knitter, Isabel dreamed of opening a yarn shop after her local yarn shop closed in 2020. Three years later, the doors of Knit B’ham opened in the Fall of 2023. Isabel loves to knit sweaters and socks!

Amy Wilke
Shop Manager + Yarn Slinger + Socials
Amy has been knitting since 2023. She is a passionate fiber enthusiast, arts graduate, and a believer in ethical, handmade clothing. She is a garment sewist that brings over a decade of shop experience to Knit, and is trained as a sewing pattern designer. Amy would love to help you through your fitting dilemmas and pattern picking woes! She enjoys knitting vests, sweaters, and anything scrappy.

Jamie Skripnik
Yarn Slinger + Pattern Designer
Jamie is a former yarn shop manager with years of experience in the business. She is also a beautiful knitter and innovative pattern designer with a knack for helping others. Jamie is in the shop on Wednesdays from 12 to 3. She is also our house blocker for your items and can repair most everything hand-knitted!

Katie Cox
Yarn Slinger
Katie is the newest addition to the Knit B’ham team, and has been knitting since 2025. She is also a sewist, and loves to make bags! While she works in data during the day, you can find her in the shop slinging yarn three days a week.

Tamara Oechslin
Knitting Teacher + Pattern Designer
Tamara is a talented knitting instructor and pattern designer who has been immersed in fiber since she was a child. She is a detailed and patient teacher who teaches many of our beginner, sock, and technical knitting classes. If you’re a lefty knitter, don’t fear- Tamara is too! By day, Tamara is a university professor, but on the weekend, you can find her knitting, running, or playing with her adorable dogs.

Helen Tankersly
Crochet + Knitting Teacher
Helen is an experienced knitter and crocheter. She has crocheted since 1958 and knitted since 1964, when she was in middle and high school. She is a beautiful craftsman that has tested patterns for designers all over the world, and teaches both group and private lessons. She loves seeing people embrace the arts, absorb new information, and grow. Helen loves making anything that challenges her!

Mattie Holmes
Teacher + Yarn Slinger
Mattie is a prolific knitter and crocheter who loves to knit socks. She is really fast and can turn around a pair in less than a week! Mattie also loves to knit sweaters and has amassed a large collection in a short time. She is a gifted and detailed teacher who does both private and group lessons and loves showing the “why” behind techniques.

Susan Barstein
Teacher + Pattern Designer
Susan learned to knit from her mom as a child. She was a teacher for years and loved the creative side of the classroom, and began working at her LYS. She loves teaching knitting classes and has over 100 published knitting designs through SKNITSB, In the Making, Vogue Knitting Live, Big Bad Wool, and Ikigaifiber
When Susan doesn’t have her hands in fiber, you can find her with family & friends, walking, doing yoga, or playing with her dog Lucy.

Katherine Berdy
Thought Partner + Yarn Slinger
Katherine has been a prolific knitter for over 35 years and is a gifted teacher. She is officially certified as an Instructor with The Knitting Guild of America and through the Craft Yarn Council’s Certified Instructors Program (CIP). You can find Katherine around the shop and leading our Tuesday night knitalongs!

Clare Emily Clifford
Teacher
Clare is a fiber and textile artist who has been knitting, spinning, and weaving for over 25 years. She loves learning about and teaching fiber preparation, historic textile creation, and natural dyeing practices from around the world. Clare frequently knits lace shawls, socks, and has recently been sewing ‘rogue quilts’ on her mother’s vintage sewing machine. As a retired literature professor, you can usually find her near a stack of books and a basket of wool while teaching and demonstrating fiber arts in Birmingham, Alabama.

Knitting and Crochet Classes
Knit B’ham is delighted to bring a variety of classes to both new and experienced fiber artists in our dedicated classroom space.

Our classes are held inside our cozy shop on Clairmont Avenue and are taught by our talented local instructors.
Classes must have a minimum of two folks enrolled to proceed, and have a cap of six folks each. Please sign up early to ensure your spot. Kits with class materials are available for purchase prior to your first session of class.
To sign up or find out more information, click on the classes below. If you would like assistance signing up for a class, we are happy to help. Just give us a call.

Cancellations must be made 72 hours prior to first class by calling the shop at 205.538.5246 or emailing knitbham@gmail.com.
If you must miss a class and contact us within that 72 hour window, you will be issued class credit and we will work with you to accommodate space in an upcoming class within 3 months.
No class credit is offered for students who no show.
If a class does not meet the minimum sign ups, we will not be able to proceed, and will contact you ahead of time to inform you of any changes.
Please understand that we cannot offer refunds.
We want everyone to have the opportunity to learn to craft, so scholarships are available for all of our classes. You can let us know if you need assistance by sending us an email to knitbham@gmail.com.

We release new classes every month- if there is something you would love to see a class on, let us know. We will typically try to coordinate with our instructors to release more sections or dates if a class sells out.

Third Space Fiber Society
2nd & 4th Thursday of each month
5:00 - 7:30 PM
Bring your project and have fun crafting with others! We welcome everyone around the big table to work on anything and everything. Make fiber friends and grow your community! We have tea, coffee, and water available and we welcome you to bring the beverage or snacks of your choice.

UFO (Unfinished Object) Month
Join us this July as we tackle all of our unfinished projects! Whether your work in progress (WIP) has been hanging out in a project bag for a couple of months…or years (no shame)… we wanna finish them together as a community! Polina Pullover KAL
Join us for our daytime August knitalong, the absolutely gorgeous Polina Pullover designed by Teti Lutsak. Jamie Skripnik will lead the group every Wednesday in August from 11-12:30 PM to knit this stranded colorwork design. More details and registration page to come.

Knit B’ham is delighted to offer the following services:

We are happy to offer help with your projects, time permitting.
First 15m or less is free for projects using yarn purchased at Knit ($15 for yarn not purchased with us).
15-30m is $30
After 30 minutes, please schedule a private lesson.

Knitting and crochet private lessons are offered across a range of our instructors for individuals or small groups. We typically conduct private lessons on-site at Knit.
To request a private lesson, email or call the shop with the information you would like to cover or project you would like to work on. We will pass along your information to an available instructor, and they will reach out to you to set up a time.
Payment is paid to the shop prior to your lesson.
Rates
1 hour: $60/person
30 minutes: $30/person

Blocking: We will wet or steam block your knitted and crocheted items to give them a finished look. Please allow for a two-week turnaround.
From $20: Small items such as a scarf, hat, or small shawl
From $30: Large items such as a sweater or blanket
Weaving in Ends: For those who hate weaving in ends, we get it (who likes weaving in ends?)
$10 minimum, $35/hour

Mending of knitted garments, including but not limited to sweaters, socks, blankets, & accessories. Please note that we only mend items created by hand.
Minimum $20 per repair.
Store Policies

Store credit will be issued for unwound yarn within 90 days of purchase. After 90 days, we are unable to accept returns.
Needles, hooks, wound yarn, and sale items are final sale.

We are happy to wind yarn purchased with us, time permitting. If we are busy, we will ask that you leave your yarn with us to be wound for next day pickup.
Yarn purchased elsewhere costs $5 per skein to wind should time allow.

Classes are on a first come, first serve basis. Payment for class will hold your spot. We have a 72 hour cancellation policy for our classes. Please email or call the shop ahead of time if unable to attend.
If you cancel prior to 72 hours, you may receive credit for a future class to be used within 90 days. Classes are nonrefundable.
