Knit B’ham weaves these powerful forces together to build an inclusive, safe, and creative community of knitting and crochet enthusiasts. 

Founded by Isabel Rubio, Knit B’ham continues her work of community building by creating a welcoming space for all people to gather around their common interest in making magic with beautiful yarn.  Knit B’ham strives to bring ethically sourced and processed natural fibers to our customers to promote slow fashion and build sustainable wardrobes.

Meet Our Team

  • Isabel Rubio

    Shopkeeper + Yarn Slinger

    Isabel spent over 30 years in the nonprofit sector and founded ¡HICA!, where she spent 22 years at the Executive Director.  A closet creative and long-time knitter, Isabel dreamed of opening a yarn shop after her local yarn shop closed in 2020. Three years later, the doors of Knit B’ham opened in the Fall of 2023.  Isabel loves to knit sweaters and socks!

  • Katherine Berdy

    Thought Partner + Yarn Slinger

    Katherine has been a prolific knitter for the past 35 years and has recently completed her Instructor certification with both The Knitting Guild of America and the Craft Yarn Council as Instructor.  Katherine develops, plans, and coordinates interesting classes for our learners ranging from basic knitting to more complicated classes on making sustainable garments, colorwork accessories, and freestyle projects.

  • Amy Wilke

    Amy has been knitting since 2023. She is a passionate fiber enthusiast, arts graduate, and a believer in ethical, handmade clothing. She is a garment sewist that brings over a decade of shop experience to Knit, and is training professionally as a sewing pattern designer. Amy would love to help you through your color dilemmas and pattern picking woes! She enjoys knitting vests and sweaters.

  • Jamie Skripnik

    Yarn Slinger + Pattern Designer

    Jamie is a former yarn shop manager with years of experience in the business. She is a beautiful knitter and innovative pattern designer. Jamie is in the shop on Wednesday’s from 12 to 3. She is also our house blocker for your items and can repair most everything!

  • Mattie Holmes

    Instruction Coordinator + Yarn Slinger

    Mattie is a fairly new knitter, who loves to knit socks! She is really fast and can turn around a pair in less than a week! Aside from socks, Mattie loves to knit sweaters and has amassed a large collection in a short time. Mattie also coordinates our classes and is an instructor herself. Let us know your class interests so we can add them to our repertoire.

Our Classes

Knit B’ham is delighted to bring a variety of classes to both new and experienced fiber artists in our newly dedicated classroom space.

Our Classes are held inside our cozy shop on Clairmont Avenue and are taught by our talented local intructors.

Classes must have a minimum of two folks enrolled to proceed, and have a cap of six folks each. Please sign up early to ensure your spot. Kits with class materials are available for purchase prior to your first session of class. We release new classes every month- if there is something you would love to see a class on, let us know!

Class Policies

If you must miss a class, we will work with you to accommodate space in an upcoming class within 3 months. No credit is offered for no shows. Cancellations must be made 72 hours prior to first class by calling the shop at 205.538.5246 or emailing knitbham@gmail.com. If a class does not meet the minimum sign ups, we will not be able to proceed, and will contact you ahead of time to inform you of any changes.

Please understand that we cannot offer refunds.

  • Ninilchik Swancho KAL

    Join Jamie for a fabulous swancho KAL on January 15th, 22nd, and 29th from 11AM-noon. We are knitting the Ninilchik Swoncho by Caitlin Hunter. It’s free to participate, so come in and get your yarn (Jamie has some excellent suggestions and color ideas), then join us around the big table for fun and support.     2nd & 4th Thursday of each month 5:30 - 7:30.

    Join fellow fiber craft artists each month as we grow our fiber community! We serve tea, coffee, and water and welcome you to bring the beverage of your choice.

Yarn weight: DK (Jamie suggests Blue Sky Fibers Woolstok, Brooklyn Tweed Dapple, or Cascade 220 Superwash Merino- and she’s made bundles for easy color picking).

US #4 / 3.5 mm and US #6 / 4.0 mm (or as required to meet gauge) 24” and 40” circulars and DPNs (or longer cables for magic loop) in both sizes.

Our Services

Knit B’ham is delighted to offer the following services:  

  • 15 minutes or less - Free, time permitting

    After 15 minutes, $20 for each additional 15-minute block of time.

  • $40 - 1/2 hour

    $60 - 1 hour

  • Blocking: We will wet or steam block your knitted and crocheted items to give them a finished look. Please allow for a two-week turnaround.

    Baby Items - minimum $20

    Hats, Gloves, Mittens, Scarves - minimum $20

    Adult Items - minimum $30

    Weaving in Ends: minimum $30

  • Mending of knitted garments, including but not limited to sweaters, socks, blankets, & accessories.

    Minimum $20 per repair.
